Technical OpportunitiesIn addition to acting, Mask and Bauble also provides opportunities to get involved in many different areas of technical theatre. Newcomers generally serve as assistants in their areas of interest and are trained to be hired as lead designers. Students interested in directing staff positions (producer, director, stage manager, and technical director) submit applications in January and are selected for the following academic year.

Directing Staff
ProducingThe executive leader of the show, the producer hires designers, balances the budget, sets deadlines, and oversees all aspects of the technical process.

DirectingDirectors lead the rehearsal room and steer each show with their unique creative vision. They are responsible for blocking and shaping the performance of the actors as well as leading the artistic development of the technical designs.

Stage ManagingThe Stage Manager schedule rehearsals, keep the director and actors on track, and communicate with the production staff. They are also responsible for running technical elements during performances.

Tech DirectingWorking with the producer, the technical director oversees all technical elements of the show with a focus on set construction, training members of the company in carpentry and electrics, and design implementation and membership.

Production Staff
SetThe set designer chooses the look and configuration of the set and works with the master carpenter and tech director to plan its construction. The carpentry crew, trained in tool use and production techniques by the master carpenter, is ultimately responsible for building the set. Meanwhile, the set dresser oversees scenic elements such as furniture, decoration, and painting.

LightsThe light designer is the creative force behind the lights, choosing where to place them on the grid, the type of fixture, the gel color, and their fall and focus. The Master Electrician helps turn this vision into reality by running light hangs and focuses.

SoundSound Designers choose and program sound cues, including pre- and post-show music and sound effects to build ambience and create atmosphere. The sound board operators work with the stage manager to run the soundboard during performances.

PropsProps masters works with the director to decide how objects onstage should look. They purchase or procure props for the show, and may also build specialty props as needed to ensure a consistent vision for the world of the play.

CostumesIn consultation with the director, costumes designers develop a creative vision for the costumes of each show. Those working on costumes also buy, make, or procure clothes, measure and fit cast members, and oversee the costume parade.

Hair and MakeupHair and makeup designers choose the look of each character and assist actors before each performance. Hair and makeup designers often execute period-specific looks, work with special effects such as prosthetics, and experiment with old-age and fantasy makeup.

PublicityThe Publicity Director makes sure that all the work we do is shared with the rest of the Georgetown community. The PD runs poster calls, social media campaigns, and any other publicity events to promote ticket sales.

GraphicsGraphic designers are commissioned with designing promotional materials such as posters, stickers, and programs. In the past, graphic designers have worked in media including paint, photography, and photoshop.
